The ChemPass Personal Sampling System is capable of collecting high-quality personal exposure samples for a number of particle-related and gaseous components. The ChemPass Personal Sampling System is capable of collecting high-quality personal exposure samples for a number of particle-related and gaseous components. The device can also be configured as a single-component sampling system to collect either PM-10 or PM-2.5. Product Details ![]() The sampler samples ambient air to assess personal exposure in a number of different settings, including environmental and personal exposure studies, industrial hygiene, and indoor air quality. Technology The ChemPass Sampler is based upon impaction and sampling technologies developed by the Harvard School of Public Health. A volumetric flow control system provides the flow rate stability necessary for high-quality results. The samplers in the system collect PM-2.5 and PM-10 on 37 mm diameter filters, organic and elemental carbon on a 15 mm diameter quartz filter, particulate nitrate and sulfate on a 15 mm diameter coated glass fiber filter, and NO2, SO2 and O3 on passive samplers.Regulatory Status Not applicable. DetailsHigh Quality Exposure Assessment... The ChemPass Personal Sampling System provides high quality samples to determine exposure to particulate matter in different size fractions, as well as other species. The sampler has a modular design for exchanging different sampling elements, and uses a battery-powered pump that maintains a consistent flow rate. The unit samples particulate and gaseous species simultaneously when equipped with a passive sampler. The performance of the systems PM-2.5 and PM-10 sampling devices, as well as the optional gas denuders and passive samplers have been characterized by the Harvard School of Public Health. System Configurations The ChemPass system comes in two main forms: • ChemPass Multi-Component Sampling System In this configuration, users can sample particulate matter for mass and species on up to four filters simultaneously. The addition of two passive samplers permits the assessment of average nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and ozone (O3) concentrations. • ChemPass Single-Component Sampling System In this configuration, a PM-2.5 or PM-10 sampler containing a 37 mm diameter collection filter is connected directly to a pump operating at 4 l/min. The sampler can be worn either in an individuals breathing zone, or as an indoor environmental sampler. Multi-component system Single-component system Multi-Component Sampling System The ChemPass Multi-Component Sampling System is the full-featured version of the device. Fully outfitted, it contains the main components listed below. Refer to the below for photos of these parts. • Elutriator with the sampling hardware below. The total system flow rate is 5.2 l/min. • PEMS (personal environmental monitoring system) for PM-10 sampling onto a 37 mm diameter filter (usually PTFE) operating at 1.8 l/min. • PEMS for PM-2.5 sampling onto a 37 mm diameter filter (usually PTFE) operating at 1.8 l/min. • Mini-PEMS for PM-2.5 sampling onto a 15 mm diameter quartz fiber filter operating at 0.8 l/min. This channel is used for the analysis of organic and elemental carbon (OC and EC) contained in PM-2.5. • Denuded Mini-PEMS for PM-2.5 sampling onto a 15 mm diameter sodium carbonate-coated glass fiber filter at 0.8 l/min. This channel is used for the collection and analysis of particulate nitrate and sulfate. To minimize the effect of acidic ambient gases upon the PM collected on the filter, the sample stream passes through two sodium carbonate-coated mini-denuders prior to the filter. • Harness for carrying the system components. • Flow manifold for combining the four flows from the sampling devices into a single flow that heads to the pump. The manifold balances the total system flow of 5.2 l/min so that each sampling component operates at the appropriate flow rate. • Tubing for connecting the sampling hardware on the elutriator with the manifold, and the manifold with the pump. • Two Ogawa Passive Samplers. One of the samplers is used to determine the average concentration of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and sulfur dioxide (SO2), while the other one collects ozone (O3) using a technology patented by the Harvard School of Public Health. • ChemPass Pumping System, which is made up of a constant-flow pump that has a 24-hour sampling capacity on a single charge. The pump is usually located in a belt-mounted pocket on the harness. • ChemPass Battery, which is available in a standard 24-hour version, or a high-capacity 48-hour configuration. The battery is usually located in a second belt-mounted pocket on the harness. A battery charger replenishes the battery when it is not in use, and requires 16 hours to fully charge. For cases in which the sampling system is installed at a fixed location and not work on a mobile individual, the pump can be powered using an available power supply. Ogawa Passive Sampler removed from enclosure Adjustable manifold (4-to-1) Single-Component Sampling System The ChemPass Single-Component Sampling System allows for the sampling of either PM-2.5 or PM-10 using a 4 l/min version of the PEMS described above. The PEMS is connected using tubing directly to the pump, which is powered either by a battery pack or power supply. For personal monitoring, the pump and standard 24-hour battery pack are equipped with belt loops. This configuration can also be used to assess the indoor concentration of either PM-2..5 or PM-10 by locating the sampler and pumping system at a fixed indoor location. Single-component personal sampler Single-component indoor air sampler ChemPass Pumping System The ChemPass Pumping System is specially configured for R&Ps application, allowing stable flow rates to be controlled between 3.5 and 6 l/min. In the multi-component sampling system, the user sets the pump to a flow rate of5.2 l/min to provide the total flow required by the sampling components. For the single-component sampling system, the pump is set for4 l/min operation. |
